I remember how challenging it is to be a teen. I remember feeling so alone and like I couldn’t talk to my parents about what was going on. For several years, I worked in high schools with students who were facing enormous challenges. Some were dealing with debilitating depression that prevented them from performing their best academically. Others were plagued with social anxiety that kept them isolated from their peers. I connect with teens in a genuine way to provide them with a safe space to explore their identity and talk about whatever problems they’re facing.
I also believe it’s important to keep parents involved, to the extent that the teen is comfortable. I explain to the teens I work with that any communication with parents is intended to help them, not expose their secrets. I clearly explain the limits of confidentiality and the times when I must contact parents or other appropriate adults (i.e., if the teen expresses intent to harm self or others, or is being abused). Otherwise, my communication with parents is at the teen’s discretion, allowing them to feel free to open up while building their confidence to make their own changes.
